ABOUT
BiographyFor nearly twenty years, Charzette Torrence has captured unforgettable moments anddocumented the power of the human spirit. A quiet yet highly perceptive observerof life, Charzette Torrence, fondly known as Charlie T., will tell you that she is destinedto be the most celebrated female photographer in the world. Inspired by memories of watching her mother take pictures, Charzette recalls, “I thought, it must be magic; the ability to use a small instrument to make an image, a memory that lasts a life time.”In 1993 Charzette was the first African-American graduate from the photography program at Detroit’s renowned art school, the College for Creative Studies. In the sameyear, she produced her first one-woman show entitled “For My People.” This photographic series was exhibited at the Detroit Repertory, which has immortalized images of “Common People in their Unassuming, Iconoclastic Environments.“ Soonafter, she exhibited with the Michigan Junior League, Detroit Artists Market, and Art In General in New York. This was followed in 1997 by the Schromberg Museum of African American Research Center’s purchase of a collection of Charlie T’s work called “ Single Working Parents” as part of their permanent collection. As with most great photographers, Charzette’s thirst for new ideals and knowledge lead her to Rockport, Maine’s Photography Workshop where she assisted famed photographers Maggie Stebbers, Arnold Newman and Joyce Tennison.Realizing that it was time to branch out on her own, Charzette opened her studio, Big As Life Photos, and was commissioned by companies such as Advance Communication,Radio One, Comerica Bank, Campbell-Edwell, Don Coleman and R.J. Dale tobring her photographic vision to their clients’ brands.Currently Charzette has an impressive photo portfolio of such celebrities as Aretha Franklin, Alice Keys, Ray Jay, Montel Jordan, and B.R. Gumer. Her published work can be seen in many magazines, including Black Enterprise, Code, Hue, Essence, and Emerge. A quiet yet highly perceptive observer of life, artist Charzette Torrence says moreabout the world in pictures than a sentence ever could. Her photographs capture, touch, and deliver emotion. They merge her vision, her art.

This may be a litte spontaneous, but I had to do it. I am Daniel, the dominican kid who met you a couple of years ago.I've always had a strong inclination for visual arts, and photography happened to be my favorite form of media in many ways. I always did point and shoot stuff without knowing about composition or photography itself, but about 2 years ago, I got my entry level SLR camera, a 50mm lens and started reading tons about photography, cameras, composition, subject matter etc.I have a growing fascination for African American artists, and people in the gay community who express themselves through art, and after reviewing your works for quite a while I had to say that I really believe it is wonderful. The way you see things is so well put together, unlike most modern photographers (which are saturating the web) who rely mostly on gadgets, shortcuts, and professional editing. Seeing someone really doin it well is always amazing. I just had to write you and let you know, I really hope all is well, and that you body of works continue to grow in its own way.Happy new year!!!Daniel,rob.xdani_gmail.comDear Charlie,Happy New Year. Hope your holiday was peaceful and pleasant for you and your loved ones.It was a sincere pleasure speaking with you during the Gen Society’s Holiday Party on the 21st of December.I am happy and thankful that the universe allowed me the opportunity to cross paths with you on that evening. You are a person of notable presence, as I found the unspoken of our encounter to be even more affirming to the spirit. Viewing your website as well, I see those life attitudes we spoke of transcend without distortion onto the picture frame. A commendable quality of your work. Looking to the new year, I hope to build my photographic skills as a means for better documenting the impact of the community development movement within this city and across our world. A field that I have been happily employed within for the last 10 years. Incidentally, we have a new building rising from the ground up and would love to capture its anticipated human and physical impact on the Western Queens community; after its opening this summer season. I have registered for the Architectural Photography Course being offered this Spring, through the Mechanic’s Institute, with the expectation that it may broaden my personal field of vision. After speaking with you 13 days ago, I feel more inspired to move forward and motivated to learn what’s possible. I owe you a well deserved thank you, and appreciate the offer to assist me along the way. Best wishes, John NapolitanoDirector of Community Development & PlanningHANAC,Inc
